What happens after I sign up to volunteer?
Once you’ve signed up with us and provided your contact details, you’ll receive a call from one of our Customer Service team members within 7 days to discuss starting your role.
I have missed your call. What should I do?
Don't worry, we will call you twice. If there’s no response, we’ll leave a voicemail and then email you.
If you’ve not received contact from us within 7 days (please check your junk/spam folders) then please call us back on 01293 862 417.
I've changed my mind, but I've signed up on the form. What should I do?
That's OK. Please email us at email@example.com and we can either remove your from our database, or keep you on file.
If your circumstances do change, just simply get back in touch with us.
In the meantime, there are many ways that you can support GAM and there is sure to be something for everyone.
What documents do I need before starting?
All volunteers will be asked to provide the following:
Proof of identity (passport, driving licence etc.)
Contact details of two character referees
You may also be asked for some personal information about your experience, health and to supply a photo, so that we can evaluate your suitability for our projects and even shout about you on our website and social pages
We’ll let you know when we contact you whether you need you to provide any further details depending on your role.
What will happen on my first day?
Amongst other things, you will:
Meet the rest of the team, have a chat about the volunteering role that interests you and find out what volunteering with us is really like.
Take part in a health and safety induction.
How much time will I be expected to commit to each week?
You can be involved as much, or as little as you like.
You’ll be able to discuss your availability with us via our online form and later in person.
Due to social distancing rules we may not have your preferred time available so being able to be flexible will mean you get the most out of volunteering with us.
Do you reimburse expenses?
It depends. If you are working at one of our hosted events, we will either provide you with food and drink vouchers or an allowance, to which you can claim back.

If however you volunteer at the museum, as an engineer or for any of our community led projects, expenses will not be paid or reimbursed.

What if I don't have any aviation or engineering experience, can I still volunteer?
Of course you can!
Many of our volunteers don't come from an aviation background, however are equally valuable to our organisation.
If you are a keen enthusiast, a student, or perhaps you are retired or are even a working professional, who just wants to get involved - we would love to hear from you.
What if I have a criminal conviction?
Volunteers must not:
have unspent criminal convictions
be subject to any criminal registers or orders
You must tell us of any convictions that arise while volunteering for us and even if you do, we will review every candidate on a case by case basis.
I live outside the UK and want to volunteer while on holiday
If you don't currently live in the UK, but would still like to volunteer with GAM during your stay, you can volunteer with us for a maximum of 30 days.

I used to be a volunteer but left, can I come back?
Of course you can.

Can I volunteer during Covid-19?
It will depend on your location and what role you’re interested in. Our museum is temporarily closed and currently unable to recruit volunteers.
Due to coronavirus it may take a little longer to start your new role.
You can still support us by taking on one of our challenges and fundraising from home.
How is the Gatwick Aviation Museum making volunteering safe?
We’ve carried out a Covid-19 risk assessment and shared the findings with our staff and volunteers
We have put cleaning, handwashing and hygiene procedures in place for everyone entering the grounds
We’ve taken all reasonable and necessary steps to help people work from home
We’ve taken all reasonable steps to maintain a 2-metre distance in the workplace
Where people cannot be 2 metres apart, we’ve done everything practical to manage transmission risk.
The Perfect Role
Can I choose what event or area I volunteer in?
Yes of course you can.
It will depend on what role you’re interested in of course, but we always work very closely with all our volunteers, to ensure they are getting as much out of the experience as we are.
If I start in a role and don't like it, can I change roles?
Yes of course.
Making sure that our volunteers are happy working with us is very important to us. If you want to try something different, just let us know and we can discuss other suitable roles.
Can I apply for multiple roles?
We understand that many people have varied interests, which is why we actually promote our volunteers getting involved in lots of different projects. Any time you give us, will be hugley appreciated.
It may mean that you’ll be contacted by us more than once to discuss these different opportunities. Do let us know however if you would like to opt out from hearing from us.
Can I volunteer with a friend?
As long as we can provide suitable roles for all interested parties - the more the merrier.
You can both volunteer at the relevant times and it is also possible to volunteer together while maintaining social distancing.
I'm nervous about volunteering
That's understandable as it can be daunting to try something new.
We have a range of opportunities to suit everyone’s needs. When we call you to discuss your opportunity we can chat through any concerns you may have.

Can I volunteer as part of my employer's corporate volunteering days?
Many of our group volunteering opportunities are paused at the moment due to the on-going pandemic.

If you’re an international student currently studying in the UK, you will be able to volunteer with GAM during the period you are enrolled at a UK university.
On application, you will be asked to provide the UK address you’ll be staying at. Don't forget to check that you do not have any restrictions on your visa that prevents you from volunteering whilst in the UK.
What qualifications can I earn?
Volunteers who work in our museum and shop may be eligible for a funded NVQ in Retail
International student sponsorship
Sadly, we are at this time unable to sponsor visa applications but are grateful for your interest in wishing to support us.

Can I volunteer, get work experience or do an apprenticeship?
You can volunteer with us by giving your time freely to help and support GAM, during which you will gain many experiences, including in the workplace environment.
We can offer you unpaid work experience which is often arranged for a fixed length of time. It will provide you with a glimpse into the world of work and the opportunity to try something new. Voluntary work experience is available in our museum.
We do offer apprenticeships that are paid combined with a qualification. It’s a chance to earn and learn! Retail apprenticeships at GAM are available on request and are subject to availability.

The purpose of this agreement is to set out what you can expect from GAMC and what we expect of you in your role.
It is not intended to be legally binding and either party can end it at any time by informing the other if they wish to do so.

We will resolve any concerns promptly and fairly in line with our complaints and feedback procedure.
On request, we will provide personal references for people who have actively volunteered their time for us.
We will operate within the spirit of equality, diversity and our values.
We will give volunteers a voice within GAMC - we’ll ask for your views and ideas and give you the opportunity to join our ‘Volunteer Voice’ advisory group.
We will celebrate your successes and recognise your achievements in our regular communications.
We will give you a clear and defined role profile.
We will offer flexibility within volunteering opportunities and take into account any caring and other commitments that you have.
We will provide written, video or face to face induction on the work of GAMC and give you appropriate resources to carry out your role effectively.
Our staff are trained to support you in whichever volunteering role you chose to do.
We will cover reasonable out of pocket travel expenses with corresponding receipts.
We will have adequate insurance to cover you while undertaking voluntary activities authorised by GAMC.
You’ll engage with your volunteering to the best of your ability.
You’ll perform tasks and undertake training in line with your role.
You’ll report on your volunteering activities regularly and when requested to by the volunteering team.
You’ll support our values and show respect to your fellow volunteers, GAMC members and staff, and other people you meet when volunteering for us. GAMC does not tolerate discrimination on the grounds of age, disability, gender, marriage or civil partnership status, race, religion or belief, or sexual orientation.
You’ll be happy for us to send you communications via email and post.
You’ll volunteer within the organisation’s health and safety policies and the boundaries of your role.
You’ll agree not to have any unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 18 or a vulnerable adult while undertaking volunteering activities for GAMC (a vulnerable adult is someone who requires professional health care, personal care or who requires day-to-day assistance because of their age, illness or disability)
When using social media to raise awareness of caring and GAMC, you’ll use your best judgement, avoiding contentious topics (e.g. politics and religion) and showing respect for others’ opinions.
You’ll respect the confidentiality of the organisation and its members.
You’ll bring any comments or concerns you might have to the attention of a member of the Volunteering Team.
You will not use your status as a GAMC volunteer for commercial gain – if you think there could be a conflict of interest between your volunteering and your private interests, please let us know.
You’ll maintain the good name and reputation of GAMC throughout your time as a volunteer.
